Condorraptor currumili
(Currumil's Cerro Condor Plunderer)Etymology
Condorraptor is derived from "condor" (for the village of Cerro Condor, close to where the fossils were found) and the Latin "raptor" (plunderer, robber, thief).
The species epithet, currumili, honours Hipolito Currumil, the landowner who discovered the fossil site.
Discovery
The remains of Condorraptor were discovered in the Canadon Asfalto Formation at "Las Chacritas", 2-3 km west of Cerro Condor village, Chubut Province, Argentina, by Hipolito Currumil.
The holotype (MPEF-PV 1672) is a partial shin.
Referred material includes teeth (MPEF-PV 1694–1695), neck vertebrae (MPEF-PV 1673–1675), back vertebrae (MPEF-PV 1676–1680, 1697, 1700, 1705), hip vertebrae (MPEF-PV 1681, 1701), tail vertebrae (MPEF-PV 1682–1683, 170), rib fragments and chevrons (MPEF-PV 1684–1685, 1703), hip bones (MPEF-PV 1686–1689, 1696, 170), and leg and foot bones (MPEF-PV 1690–1693), all from the same locality as the holotype and likely from the same individual.
A poorly preserved partial skull (MPEF 1717) found at "Queso Rallado" near Cerro Cóndor by Pablo Puerta and briefly mentioned as possibly the oldest known ceratosaur by Rauhut in 2002, might belong to Condorraptor.
